Data Security
Is your Information safe?
Most recycling services are just brokers who handle materials in bulk - individual devices are not screened for sensitive information until they have passed through several hands, states and often continents. This leaves a gaping whole in security as these devices move from place to place. This practice has lead to tremendous security and environmental problems throughout the recycling industry.
EWAs processes were designed to do right what other recycling and reuse services do wrong. Our workflows were designed around a 'secure chain of custody' operations model where materials remain in our possession from the point of collection all the way through documentation, security screening and de-manufacturing - without use of any outside logistics or processing contractors.
EWA also provides additional quality measures by default and at no cost to our clients. A detailed record of each device including serial numbers and disposition are provided to clients in electronic format and data destruction services are provided at no additional cost.
| Media Type | Disposition | |
|---|---|---|
| Used thermal transfer rolls | >>>> | shredding & disposal |
| Used impact printer ribbons | >>>> | shredding & disposal |
| Hard disk drives (reusable) | >>>> | electronic firmware erasure |
| Hard disk drives (not reusable) | >>>> | physical destruction & scrap recovery |
| Optical media & Magnetic Tape | >>>> | shredding & disposal |
| Asset tags | >>>> | removal & disposal |
| Other labeling/identifiers | >>>> | removal & disposal |
| Static memory devices | >>>> | physical destruction & scrap recovery |
As an additional precaution, EWA performs the necessary firmware erasure, physical destruction and shredding within our facility - we do not ship these materials to third party processors. Managing these risks within our secure chain of custody ensures the highest level of security. 'Declassified' materials can then be reused or recycled without concern.
Everyone knows that information on hard disk drives pose security risks, but did you know...
- Most work group and network capable printers have hard drives in them that store the jobs they have printed?
- Wax thermal printing such as those used in fax machines have an exact photo-negative copy of the pages they have printed on the waste ribbon roll?
- Smart network devices such as gateway/routers often have PCMCIA cards in them that contain secure IP address and authentication information on them?
- Routers and smart network appliances usually contain private IP address and network security information?
We do - and we screen all donor materials for these risks automatically!
This video provides a brief and clear message as to how secure our information security methods are...
